Amato's Pizza - Etna, PA

I was told by a co-workers, and also read online, that Amato's Pizza on Butler Street in Etna has some good pizza.  I found this to be false and it may possibly have been one of the worst pizzas I have ever eaten.  I would have rather ordered from one of the big chain pizza shops, had a frozen pizza, or just eaten my shoes.

The crust was bland and spongy.  I would be surprised if they made their own dough and didn't just use pre-made pizza crusts.  The sauce was very bland.  It had a slight hint of garlic to it, but it just tasted off.  I think it was garlic powder and not real garlic.  The rubbery cheese was the best part, and it was mediocre, at best.  I think the spongy and flavorless crust ruined it.  If you put their blandish sauce and average cheese on a good crust it would have been edible, and I would have probably at least tried it again in the future.  I would not recommend Amato's and I would never go back.

          Crust: 2.5/10
          Sauce: 3.5/10
          Toppings: 4.5/10
          Overall: 3.5/10

  1. I grew up eating Amato's pizza, and now that I live in Maine, I miss it SOOO much. In fact, looking at the picture, I can almost taste it. I've forced my husband to eat it a few times, and while he doesn't hate it like you do, he certainly doesn't sing its praises like I do. :o) I think it's one of those you either LOVE it or you HATE it types of things... very few "in the middles." I just happen to be on the love side -- everything you wrote about... the crunchy, nearly flavorless crust... the acidic, tomato-y sauce... the rubbery cheese (you totally nailed that one)... I love it. All of my favorite memories of childhood come with it. I picture my mum, brother, cousins, aunts and me gathered around my gram's kitchen table while she leans against her oven and watches, rolling here eyes -- because she doesn't care for pizza, period. We pile on more salt -- because there isn't ever enough salt in pizza -- and fight for the corner pieces. Since my gram passed 11 years ago (and her birthday is tomorrow --wow, that's a strange coincidence!), this memory is bittersweet, but it only makes eating Amato's pizza even more delicious.

Thanks for the amazing walk down memory lane, Matt!

  2. I too grew up on it and for me it's 'comfort food'. I now live in Florida & crave AMATO'S pizza. In fact it is an absolute must do when I visit my hometown. It is really good pizza, however, it is different from most. The crust is more light and airy like a bread dough. The sauce is very tasty. What I believe makes it really good is the use of whole milk mozzarella cheese. The best sandwich in town is at Amato's which is Sam's Special Sub. So I don't know what the hell this guy is talking about

  3. I enjoy Amato's pizza.....but I might see this guy's points. There have been times when it wasn't made right and the crust I know and love is just soggy and bland.
