Frankstown Wood Fired Pizza - Penn Hills, PA

Prior to today I didn't know Frankstown Wood Fired Pizza existed. Frankstown Wood Fired Pizza is located on Frankstown Road in Penn Hills. When I found them after a quick search online for a new pizza joint, I was very excited as I love wood fire cooked pizza. When I arrived the first things I noticed were the large brick wood fired oven, limited menu, small deli case with various Italian meats, olives, and salads, and the giant mound of firewood out back. This place is the epitome of 'hole in the wall.' They only sell 12" pies, which cost $6.50. Frankstown Wood Fired has a few styles of pizza, which are the Marinara (standard pizza), Margherita (chunky tomatoes for sauce), and Bianco (white pizza with feta cheese.)

The crust on my marinara style pizza was burnt. I am sure because of the wood oven that this is fairly common. There were several slices that were not to badly burnt, so I will base my review on that. The crust was rustic and flavorful. I really wish that it was not burnt. The Margherita style pie I also got was cooked perfectly. The cheese was also a bit overcooked, but it did not really affect the flavor. The sauce on this pizza was probably my favorite part. It was slightly sweet but had a heavy basil flavor. Most sauces on pizza are fairly similar. This sauce had a lot of flavor which I liked very much. I will be going back to Frankstown Wood Fired Pizza again with hopes they do not burn my next pie. I will modify my review if this is the case. I recommend trying them out, they are not the best, but something a bit different.

          Crust: 7/10
          Sauce: 8/10
          Topping: 7/10
          Overall: 7.5/10
